Today, as far as the best players in the world are concerned, amateurism has virtually ceased to exist. Since the monetary rewards in professional tennis are great, there's no point in remaining an amateur any longer, now that all big tournaments are Opens - open to professionals as well as amateurs. Something nice has been lost as a result, but the gain of huge piles of money obviously compensates for the lost of huge piles of niceness.
